BOTANY DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES
2016-2017 (Even and Odd semester)


v  Guest lecture was arranged on the topic “Fascinating World of Mushrooms” by Dr.Sudeep Ghate, SRF, Bioscience Department of Mangalore University, on 09-07-2016 in the library hall.
v  VANAMAHOTSAVA” was celebrated on 13-07-2016 in the college campus. Dr.M.S.Joishi, H.O.D of Botany, & Vice Principal Canara College, Mangalore was the chief guest of the function. Saplings provided by the Forest Department of Kundapura Division were distributed to the students & staff members, and were planted in the college campus.
v   Plant-a- week” programme was started on 22-07-2016 and regularly. Rare, medicinal plants are being planted in the botanical garden of the campus, with the active participation of especially I B.Sc. students.

v  I B.Sc. students were taken for algae collection in and around the campus on 23-08-2016. Algae specimens collected by the students are preserved in the Departmental Museum.




v  Other activities of the department such as ‘Light of Knowledge’ (collection of motivational Quotes), display of articles related to science & general articles regularly displayed in the wall magazine “NESARA”, under the able leadership of student convener as a part of “Sanjeevini club” activities.

v  Classes were also conducted for the students of “Plant Identification” certificate course regularly.


v  A study tour to Annapoorna Nursery and Biotech Lab & “Medicinal Plants Gardens” nurtured by Sri. A.M. Rao was arranged on 26-12-2016. Total 49 students from III BZC & III MBB and 3 staff members participated in the programme.

v  Four students  from  III BZC  participated in an International Conference held at Alva’s College, Moodbidri (Sponsored by CES & IISC  Bangalore) from 28-12-2016 to 30-12-2016(3 Days) on  the topic “Conservation & Sustainable Management of ecologically sensitive regions of Western Ghats”

v  Under Vidyarthimithra Programme students of III BZC & MBB had interaction with alumini Mr. Ranjan on 28-01-2017, who is presently persuing his M.Sc. in Chemistry at SDM college, Ujire.
 v  Ten students from I, II and III BZC participated in Mangalore University Level Science Competitions “RACEMUS-2017” held at BOTANY DEPARTMENT OF MANGALORE UNIVERSITY on 10-2-2017. And Gururaj of III BZC bagged II prize in PHOTOGRAPHY.  
v  Various competitions were held in the month of January & first week of February on behalf of “FLORA CLUB’’ and all the students actively participated in the events.


v  Prize distribution ceremony to the winners of various competitions conducted on behalf of Flora Club of Botany Department was arranged on 16-2-2017. The function was graced by Sri. A.M. Rao as the Chief Guest. He also delivered a lecture on the topic “ROLE OF HERBS IN PROTECTING OUR HEALTH”.

vMs.Sangeetha Shenoy III BZC Attended UGC sponsored National Seminar held at Neharu Memorial College, Sullia on 22-2 -2017 and presented a poster on her research topic “A Comparative Study on Ethno Cultivation and SRI Cultivation of Oryza sativa L. varieties in Kundapura Taluk of Udupi District” and bagged the first prize under the guidance of Prof. Gayathri Pai. 
vTwenty Students from I BZC and II BZC a participated in UGC sponsored National Seminar held at PPC, Udupi, on 27-2-2017 & 28-2-2017on the topic “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants of Western Ghats and their Sustainability” and Ms. Sowmya of I BZC presented a research paper on the topic “A Study On Medicinal Flora of Bhandarkars’ College Campus” under the guidance of Prof.Gayathri Pai. Students also had an interaction with an eminent Scientist Dr.K.G.Bhat on various aspects of taxonomy.

v  participated in  Mangalore University level Work Shop on the topic  “ Key words for New Syllabus in Botany  for Odd Semester” &  “Key words for New Syllabus in Botany  for Even  Semester” on 25- 6 2016 & 13-12-2016” respectively at University College Mangalore” organized by VANASHREE (Mangalore University Botany Teachers’ Association).

v  Served as BOE member of APR/MAY 2016 and 2016 OCT/NOV 2016 Mangalore University Examinations in Botany.

BOTANY DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES
2015 – 2016 (JUNE – OCTOBER)
  • Activities of the department started on 15-06-2015 as college reopened after summer vacations. Ms. Mookambika.A.N joined the department as a lecturer on 19-06-2015.
  • In connection with the forth coming NAAC peer team visit, necessary preparations were started on 15-06-2015. In this regard Departmental plan of action for the year 2015-2016 was submitted to the IQAC along with the faculty profile.
·   Stock of the department was duly verified by stock verifying officers Dr. Ramesh. M. Chimbalkar & Dr. M .B. Nataraj on 24-06-2015 at 4.15 P.M.
·   Departmental meetings are  conducted on 05-06-2015, 23-06-2015, 21-06-2015 & 22-09-2015.

· Vanamahostava was celebrated on 08-07-2015. Prof. Mohandas Pai Retired Principal was the chief guest of the function. Saplings were planted in the botanical garden and were also distributed to the students. The programme was presided over by the Principal of the college Dr. N. P. Narayan Shetty.

·  One day state level seminar proposal on the topic “Integrated & profitable farming for coastal region” was submitted to the UGC on 16-08-2015.


·  Guest lecture on “Grafting” was arranged for final year B.Sc students by the resource person Sri. Annappa Devadiga on 26-08-2015 between 2 pm and 4 pm. Sir gave practical demonstration on various types of grafting in the botanical garden and botany lab.

· Smt.Gayathri Pai, H.O.D attended BOE meeting held at University College, Mangalore on 27-08-2015.
· Parent’s Teachers meeting was arranged for I B.Sc students on 29-08-2015. All the departmental staff members actively participated and proper guidance was given to the students.
· I B.Sc students were taken for algae collection on 31-08-2015, and specimens collected by the students are preserved in the museum.
·  II B.Sc students were taken for fern collection on  04-08-2015 and specimens are preserved in the museum.
· Smt. Gayathri Pai , Ms. Shwetha.B and Ms. Mookambika A.N attended UGC sponsored National level workshop on     “Operation and Maintenance of Analytical instruments” held at SBC Karkala on 07-09-2015 & 08-09-2015.
·  Planting of saplings in the botanical garden of the college, under the programme “Plant – A – Week” is regularly conducted during II hour on Monday for I B.Sc students.

•   An innovative programme “Vidyathri Mitra” was inaugurated by the old student, Sri Abhishek Shetty, who is an employee of WIPRO Company. This programme is specially designed to motivate Final year students to seek jobs and persue higher studies. An interactive session will be conducted with Alumni of BZC and present students.

· “Light of Knowledge” another unique activity is being conducted for Final Year students to motivate, develop personality etc. students are collecting and writing inspirational quotes in a book and discussions are held on this regard.


·  In the departmental wall magazine “Nesara”, articles appeared in news papers related to science, agriculture current affairs are being displayed regularly by the students.


·  Students are also encouraged to contribute to the departmental   online blogspot “Sasyashyamala”(www.sasyashyamala.blogspot.com) by writing articles on science topics.

· Students and staff from St. Theresa P.U.College , Shankaranarayana visited our department on 06-10-2015. The students visited the Botanica, Museum and Botany lab and were addressed by HOD and staff members of the department.

(JANUARY 2016  TO  APRIL 2016 )

·         Smt.Gayathri Pai, Assistant Professor &H.O.D, presented a paper on Topic “ENDOPHYTIC FUNGI ASSOCIATED WITH PHYLLANTHUS RETICULATA” a medicinal plant of Family Euphorbiaceae, in a UGC sponsored National Seminar held at JCBM College Shringeri on 19-01-2016.
·         Ms.Sampada Bhat III BSc. BZC presented a paper on topic “ SACRED PLANTS OF KUNDAPURA TALUK OF UDUPI DISTRICT, KARNATAKA”, in a UGC sponsored National Seminar held at JCBM College Shringeri on 19-01-2016.
·         Under “VIDYARTHI MITRA” Programme students of III BSc.BZC &MBB had a interactive session with Ms. Malani.K.N an old student of BCK and presently working at Ajjarkad Women’s College, Udupi on 28-01-2016 and with Mr. Srinidhi, Lecturer at Jyanasudha College, Karkala on 30-01-2016.



·         11 students were sent for Inter Collegiate Science Competition- “UCM EXPLORA VISION” held at University College, Mangalore on 06-02-2016.

Mr.Finny Andrew Abharaham III B.A. EJP bagged 2nd Prize in Drawing &Painting and  Ms. Sana anjum of III BSc BZC got 2nd Prize in Pick and speak Competition.
·         Smt. Gayathri Pai, Participated in a National level conference Sponsored by SIMA on 08-02-2016. At Vivekananda college, Puttur.
·         Ms. Bhavya II Bsc BZC presented a research paper on “MEDICINAL PLANTS IN A.S. BHANDARKARS’ MEMORIAL BOTANICAL GARDENS, BHANDARKARS’ COLLEGE KUNDAPURA”.
·         A study tour was conducted for III BSc .BZC & MBB students to Manipal University on 11-02-2016 and visited Life Science, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Garden at End Point, Anatomy Museum & Library.

·         07 students from I, II and III BZC&MBB Participated in Intercolliegiate Mangalore University Level Science Competition- “BIO SYNERGY-2016” Organized by Bioscience Department Of Mangalore University on 13-02-2016 at Mangalore University.
·         On behalf of Flora-Club- various competitions were conducted to encourage the students and develop soft skills, creativity etc.

·         On 08-03-2016 students of class 5th, 6th& 7th from “Government Primary school Vaderahobli” visited Botanical Garden, Museum & Botany Lab. They were educated on aspects of Botanical Science by Staff members of the Department.

·         Guest Lecture on the Topic “MOSSES OF WESTERN GHATS AND COASTAL BELT OF KARNATAKA” was arranged on 29-02-2016 by Dr.Vijayalakshmi. C.Bhat (12 to 1 P.M).


·         Prof. V.Aravinda Hebbar on “SCOPE OF BIOLOGY” on 29-03-2012 from 3.00 to 5.00 P.M.


·         Guest lecture on the topic “HOPE IN SCOPE OF BOTANY” on 13-04-2016 by Dr.Shobha and Prize distribution Programme foe winners of various competitions conducted on behalf of “Flora Club”
·         Guest lecture on the topic “CHALLENGES IN THE CORPORATE SECTOR” by Ms. SavithaShastri on 16-04-2016.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES 2014 – 2015
           Curriculum Development:
* Smt. Gayathri pai, H.O.D participated in syllabus revision workshop at University College, Mangalore on June 2014.
* Student feedback on curriculum is obtained from the students & preserved in the Department.
       Teaching & Learning:
* Various teaching methods such as black board, seminars, smart class, plant materials, Hand drawn charts etc. are being used regularly and preserved in the Department.
* Manuals are prepared for the I. B.Sc, II B.Sc and III B.Sc classes.
* Digitization of study material by Mrs. GAYATHRI PAI on different topics of the syllabus (Anatomy, Respiration, Phytophthora etc.) & Ms. Shwetha. B on Ecology & Economic importance of Fungi and has been preserved in the Department.
* Departmental Library has been maintained and books are regularly issued to the students & staff. A separate register has been maintained in the Department.

* Smt. Gayathri pai participated in one day state level seminar on “Edible and Non – Edible mushrooms of Karnataka” on 12 – 12 – 2014 at Vivekananda College, Puttur. Miss. Deepa M. V. of II BZC was also taken to this programme.
*Miss. Shwetha. B. has  participated in one day national level seminar held at Alva's college, Moodabidri on 28/2/15.

c)     Research consultancy & Extension:

* Smt. Gayathri Pai is pursuing her Ph.D from Mangalore University after successful completion of course work examination with distinction.
*Smt. Gayathri Pai has successfully completed refresher course on topic “genes to genomics” from academic staff college, Mysore University, Mysore from 25/1/14 to 14/2/14.
*Smt. Gayathri Pai has presented a paper on research topic “ The role of endophytic fungi, isolated from medicinal plants in sustainable development” in the UGC sponsored national seminar organized by Sri Bhuvenendra College, Karkala on 18th February, 2014. 
* Coordinator of Drawing & Painting classes, which is regularly conducted on every Saturday between 2 and 4 pm as a part of EC & CC.
* One of the members of committee organized for Science Quiz Competition, in connection with Annual day celebrations.
* Management funded project titled “Common Sacred plants of Kundapur” was assigned to Miss Deepa M.V, Miss Vinutha B and Miss Sampada Bhat of II B.Sc. BZC.

* Self financed small projects are given to the following I. B.Sc students, Shivanjali, Asmitha Poojary, Bhavya, Feba and U. Sangeetha Shenoy on the topic “Algal diversity of Kundapur”.
* All the students of II B.Sc are assigned the project of making Herbarium sheets on different families.
c)     Student support & progression:

* Poor learners are given special coaching to score good marks.
* Students of III B.Sc were taken for one day study tour on 23 – 12 – 2014 to Central Agriculture and Horticulture Institute Brahmavara and Annapoorna Tissue culture Laboratory, Petri to learn about innovative practices being used in Agriculture, Dairy etc.
* II B.Sc students are taken for taxonomical study of local plants.

* I B.Sc (already taken) for Algal collection. Good specimens are preserved in the Natural History Museum of the Department.
* Old students regularly visit our department and one of the Alumni Mr. Mahendra donated Rs. 500 towards departmental activities on 12 – 12 – 2014, who is an employee of Cipla Pharamaceuticals Bangalore.

*Miss Divya Adiga of III B.Sc has secured total 300 and Miss Smithal Padmaja scored 299 out of 300 marks in botany, and have made a record in the history of the department.
* Majority of the students recently passed out (May – 2014) are doing Higher studies at Mangalore University and other Universities.
* Five students got selected in the campus selection conducted by renowned companies such as Wipro, Infosys etc.
* For the benefit of the students guest lectures are regularly conducted.


* On behalf of Natural Science Association many activities such as planting medicinal plants in the Botanical garden, enlightening of students about home remedies etc have been conducted.
*   Conduction of extra classes for late admitted students.

c)     Innovative practices:
Ø             Vanamahotsava was celebrated in the college campus on 9th July 2014. Environmental Engineer Sri Raghavendra, B.E., was chief guest of the function. He enlightened the students about importance of planting saplings. Dr. N.P. Narayana Shetty, Principal, presided over the function and spoke on this auspicious occasion.

        Saplings provided by the Forest Department of Kundapura were planted in the college campus, and were distributed to the students.
Ø     A Departmental wall magazine “NESARA” is maintained in the Department. Student conveners from III B.Sc. Miss Chaithra and Miss Ashwini are displaying paper cuttings  related to agriculture, recent development in Science etc.
Ø     “Plant – A – Week” programme, an innovative practice of introducing medicinal plants to students of I B.Sc is regularly conducted on Tuesday between 3.50 – 4.40 (Leisure of the students) in the College Botanical Garden. Programme was conducted from 22 – 7 – 2014. Miss U. Sangeetha Shenoy and Miss Feba Elizabeth Abraham are taking extra effort in conducting this programme under the guidance of staff  Miss. Shwetha. B. She has also participated in one day national level seminar held at Alva's college, Moodabidri on 28/2/15.
